Tourismuskonzept Freiburg 2025, (TK3)

Mixed reality

Nis Petersen und Johannes Thimm

In the artistic production "Tourismuskonzept Freiburg 2025, (TK3)", Nis Petersen and Johannes Thimm appear to align themselves with Freiburg's urban development and city marketing.

Building upon the "
Tourismuskonzept Freiburg 2024" as a starting point, they take on the language, logic and dramaturgy of a municipal tourism concept in order to undermine, expand and critically reflect it. The boundaries between official tourism strategy and speculative fiction become blurry.

What happens once Freiburg as the touristic "south" of Germany no longer seems southern enough and thus the south of the moon is claimed? The artistic production "Tourismuskonzept Freiburg 2025, (TK3)" responds with a shift of perspective, looking from Freiburg to the Moon. In three parts - gif,
press release and social media publications - it encourages questioning local and interplanetary visions of the future that go beyond the obvious.

Nis Petersen and Johannes Thimm analyse and continue the narrative and visual language of official documents, reflecting on how language and storytelling in city and tourism marketing create realities and shape futures.

All three formats are interwoven by a narrative about tourism and its strategic orientations, in which Freiburg and the Moon are linked by "the South". Like the moon, the city of Freiburg acts as a projection surface for wishes, desires and the pursuit of superlatives. The shifting of frontiers into outer space reflects current dynamics: Who owns landscapes and resources? Who is allowed to use them - and who is granted agency?

The artistic production takes up and continues the research project "sampling for relations in the light of a satellite" (2024-2025) as part of the third Biennale for Freiburg "Happy Places".

Nis Petersen and Johannes Thimm work collaboratively. In their artistic practice, they engage with their local contexts, institutional frameworks, speculative narratives and questions of justice. In their current project Tourismuskonzept Freiburg 2025, (TK3), Nis Petersen and Johannes Thimm are interested in how urban planning and tourism strategies create socio-economic values and consolidate power structures. Both engage in an artistic research approach that includes the performative and a media-reflexive approach to technology.
